Whose School Rules?

October 23rd, 2007 · 23 Comments

We like running competitions. They’re a chance for us to get rid of years of unsold and slightly musty T-shirts. For this jawn, we want to know whose school was the most hip-hop. Which famous rapper / producer / DJ / graf artist / breaker did you go to school with? Did Dinco D give you a wedgie? Did Grandmaster Caz dob you in to miss for drawing a speed dobber in the loo? We want to know – and we want photographic evidence if you have it. The opening gambit comes from yours truly, Drew Huge of the Fat Lace crew. I expect this rather small ante to be upped quite quickly…

The School:
toot hill

The alumni:
Drew Huge of the Fat Lace Crew
DJ Superix of Southern Hospitality
DJ Ivory of the P Brothers

Agreed, it’s hardly that school in Staten Island where all the Wu-Tang smoked fags behind the bike sheds, but it’s a start. There’s a Fat Lace t-shirt and some unwanted swingbeat 12″s for the best school. It’s edumacational!

Roger Bannister, the first man to run the mile in less than 4 minutes went to my school. So did Team Great Britain athlete Jason Gardener, who was in the year below me. He punched my friend in the face at a nightclub once. Also Andrew ‘Egg from This Life’ Lincoln was in the year above me. His real surname is Clutterbuck.

I the T – because you didn’t name the school. We need evidence. And I’ve interviewed Mr 45. I’m not sure he went to school.

Brooklands Middle School & Vandyke Upper School, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire: Producer Evil Ed and his old MC Mistima (of Hidden Identity ‘fame’) who was also the old MC partner with Silver Bullet, although Bullet went to another school in the town he used to come to Vandyke and play footie, chat up girls, smoke fags and tag up the bikesheds, so does that count? Ps. I dunno if I want one of Andrew Emery’s old ‘worn once-but like new’ T-Shirts anyway!

I did attend said school with the Wu (New Dorp HS, Staten Island NYC, Home of whiteboys getting stuck up on ball courts).
I attend the school from 91/92, as UMC’s (from same area) faded and Wu was just getting ready to jump off. King Just was also around..and then my brothers were in the class of Shyheim.
Can I get my shirt or do you want more?

  • 16 keatso // Oct 28, 2007 at 3:21 pm

Wait, I just went back and read that intro…I did play basketball with Dinco D when I was in HS on Long Island. Wheres my trophy?

now hold on just a minute there mate,

if i knew this was open to new yorkers i would’ve never bothered to even get involed here…

not that i don’t consider my schools legacy to be of the highest level of craftmanship and artistic pioneering profundity, but it’s just not really the same as standing in the dinner queue with Cedric Miller is it ?

  • 19 keatso // Oct 28, 2007 at 6:22 pm

Dinner? We did get free lunch and breakfast (aka “food coupons” aka welfare a la ODB driving around in a limo spending food stamps).
If you think about it, NYers should get special consideration. Can you imagine trying to learn with Method Man in your class?
This is all under the false assumption that these dudes actually attended school often btw.

  • 20 keatso // Oct 28, 2007 at 6:26 pm

My man Rich Nice (not that one) attended Murray Bertaum HS with Ali Shaheed Muhammed, who he described as being “a pretty boy dickhead”.
Not to be confused with Phife, who attended Sr. at Garvey High in 1988.

  • 21 keatso // Oct 28, 2007 at 6:31 pm

Also re: Dinco (and Busta and Charlie B.) -all attended Uniondale HS in the leafy suburbs of Long Island (as can be seen in “sobb story” here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=veed6QHL5oY).
Yet Busta’s background has gone retroactively thuggish. He went from stressing over the PTA, to memories of “hustlin cracks and weed, just to get by”.
