When They Reminisce…

November 29th, 2007 · 10 Comments

reminisce

There is, categorically, no such thing as a bad hip-hop reminiscing track. Whether it’s reminiscing about hip-hop, or about a dead friend, they’re always dope, period. Maybe it’s because hip-hop specialises in death – the death of people, the death of fads and genres – that it’s perfected looking backwards. ‘T.R.O.Y’, ‘Fallen Soldiers’, ‘Going Way Back’, ‘Nickeled Needles’, ‘Brooklyn Battles’, some other ones, they’re all dope. Hit us off in the comments with your favourite reminiscing tracks, and sample the gems below, including that new Wu-Tang ODB tribute. And if you haven’t heard that Thirstin Howl III track before, be aware that Dana Dane smashes it…

Wu-Tang Clan – Life Changes

R.A. The Rugged Man – On The Block

Biz Markie – My Man Rich

Thirstin Howl III feat. Dana Dane – O.G. Stripes Part 2

I like ‘take it back’ off that freestyle professors LP, dope beat and shout outs to the old school. Just-Ice ‘Going Way Back’ or is that more of a brag than a reminisce? ‘Home Of Hip Hop’ was a reminiscing tracks…’do you remember the days when kool herc played…’

Kool Keith – ‘takin it back’(theres a theme emerging here) was a recent fav, apparently he went to Clifton and girls dug his quarter field(?!)
Edan – ‘fumbling over words that rhyme’.
BUT my personal favourite is Big Jus’s indecipherable ramblings about New York graffiti on Company Flow’s Lune TNS. “Peace to Dondi and 168 Tracy” etc. classic. obviously this wasnt built for you so fuck you.

Not so much a reminiscing song but blatant fantasy(if it’s true it really is incredible) is Colored Section’s Bomb MC.
