Obscure Roxanne battle records fortnight part 6

January 20th, 2008 · 1 Comment

There’s more than one MC who claimed to be ‘Roxanne’s Man’. This time it’s the wackly named Ricardo’s turn. “I’m Ricardo, the finest baby maker / I’ve got more rhymes than McDonald’s got potatoes” he says, giving you some idea of the level of lyrical ability here. That said, there’s a nice beat, some sloppy beatbox and yet another MC taking the UTFO Roxanne template and adjusting the lyrics to their own end, which ticks all the boxes. The scratches on this are by Disco Gee and Grand Wiz Freddy Gee but, more interestingly, it was produced by Edwin Birdsong, who co-wrote ‘Running Away’ with Roy Ayers. He produced a few rap records on Singh, including the debut 12″ from Too Nice. When they later got signed to Arista, he remixed their ‘Cold Facts’ single. He also produced another Roxanne wars single, which you’ll get to hear soon enough…
