He’s largely hype, but there’s some skill in there amidst the too forced and ill thought out metaphors.

but half the time he does sound a touch Mencap.

  • 2 Fila my nutsack // May 31, 2008 at 7:39 pm

shite tunes. His first 3 LP’s had some gems on, but the beats he picks now are fucking hideous, he needs Mannie Fresh like Guru needs Primo.

  • 3 salvador darlo // May 31, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Only his first 3 Lps? What, so Tha Carter 1 – had no decent tunes on it – despite being pretty much all Mannie Fresh??

  • 4 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 1, 2008 at 6:45 am

Did we ever think we’d see a time when Lil’ Wayne was rhyming over Holy Thursday? Wow – track is incredible.

This was obviously going to be disappointing – it’s okay but definately the runt of The Carter trilogy. A Milli is still sick, the 2 other KanYe tracks aren’t too great but Let The Beat Back is ridiculous. Juelz and Fab kill Nothin’ On Me (Who’d a thunk Weezy over Alchemist?), Jay Z is bogstandard on Mr. Carter and i haven’t heard a Just Blaze beat which has impressed me since I’m Talkin’ To You and the rest of the guests are entirely forgettable (wtf is up with no Baby on the album?). I’d agree he definately needs Mannie Fresh back but he has a plethora of great post-’04 tracks not with Mannie and he’s adept at trying different styles as The Carter 2 proved. It definately would’ve benefitted with having the likes of La La La on here, though.

The problem with this one is that it’s a little too predictable and it doesn’t really sound and feel like a southern rap album since Wayne is now a superstar. It sounds and feels like a Game album : cold big budget rap. Actually, a better comparison would be it sounds like King by T.I : over-polished soulless superstar rap but with enough traces of the still-great rapper you fell in love with and including a handful of amazing stylized tracks.

Right, we’ve finally got this albatross outta the way, let’s hope for Mannie Fresh to get on board for the supposed Hot Boys reunion album.

  • 5 salvador darlo // Jun 1, 2008 at 1:26 pm

Right – Brian – as ever some great on-point comments. I’m a break down your post:

‘it sounds like King by T.I ‘

    - I just said EXACTLY that to someone today – it’s better though as Weezy hasn’t quite Sid Jamesed his voice like T.I. did

‘It sounds and feels like a Game album : cold big budget rap.’

    - word

‘(wtf is up with no Baby on the album?)’

    - your most on-point comment – this almost offends me that he’s not here and that fact that there’s no room for TMIX on teh beats who did most of teh incredible tracks from ‘Like Father…’

‘Did we ever think we’d see a time when Lil’ Wayne was rhyming over Holy Thursday? Wow – track is incredible.’

    - NO. BUT…I disagree here – yes track is dope – but this should be an outerspace album and there’s no room for Axelrod in space 2008

On the subject of Just Blaze – you’re being kind Brian – even that shit you mentioned is too damn noisy. Just Blaze should be on NO album these days.

The Mannie Fresh thing…hmmm don’t see the obsession with putting them back together…I personally think the aformentioned TMIX and DJ Nasty have been hotter than Mannie over the last few years – just to mention a few tracks – ‘Army Gunz’, ‘Leather So Soft’, ‘Stuntin Like My Daddy’, ‘Ist Key’, ‘Hustler Musik’ etc. – is no-one paying attention to these dudes?? I’ve never heard their names mentioned.

Juelz and Fab do kill that beat – but fuck if I want it on this album. Save that for a Jadakiss album or some shit. I have love for Alan – but fuck if I want him and Wayne anywhere near each other.

But in general Brian, great summary as ever.

  • 6 salvador darlo // Jun 1, 2008 at 1:27 pm

    - word – reading back – you did mention the post ‘04 Wayne tracks without Mannie – just not the names – props.

  • 7 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 1, 2008 at 3:11 pm

Very good points about TMIX and DJ Nasty. Some of their recent production with the All $tar kid on his mixtapes has been superb. Ova Here Hustlin’ was my shit from the much underrated album with Birdman (they should remix this with Birdman adlibs on every track). A Runners track on this would’ve been also welcome since Money On My Mind was one of the highlights of The Carter 2 and Wayne made the Hustlin’ beat his own with his freestyle on it.

However, i love Wayne’s post-Dipset steez on the Heatmakerz tracks like Tha Mobb + shit like either version of Cannon too and him and Juelz (who is sick) always sound incredible together (ditto Wayne and Kurupt) and F-a-b-o-l-o-u-s is a perfect companion to them.

I’ll take all that stuff over songs with Wyclef + Got Money and Lollipop, which are not exactly Pop, Lock & Drop It remix or Good Life as far as autotune trend tracks go.

Another disappointing thing about this is that it doesn’t have the 3 album theme tracks all with the same beat like both The Carter 1 and 2 had.

  • 8 Fila my nutsack // Jun 1, 2008 at 3:43 pm

OK, I only have 3 solo LP’s and they sound better than the latest one so far to me and OK I agree there were some decent tunes on Carter 2, receipt and shooter, a coupleof others I liked. I don’t rate him that much though, if you think he’s dope then fair enough but I think his voice is reedy and his lyrics are rather weak.

  • 9 Fila my nutsack // Jun 1, 2008 at 3:45 pm

Hustler Musik was a goodie too.

  • 10 lace da booze // Jun 1, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Lil Wayne is fucking shit. The sooner the cunt OD’s on whatever it is he’s addicted to the better. Failing that maybe he’ll get shot while coming out of the AIDS clinic and then run over by a lorry before being set on fire by a passing tramp who’ll then piss on him while stabbing him repeatedly in the face with a rusty flick knife.

  • 11 salvador darlo // Jun 2, 2008 at 3:58 am

    ^
So are you feeling Wayne or what?

  • 12 UK fresh // Jun 2, 2008 at 4:42 am

He owes a lot to the genius A&R who put him on ‘Soldier’, that propelled him into the US mainstream. I’m yet to be convinced that he’s a truly great rapper but only in as much as it took me many years to realise it didn’t matter that ‘Pac wasn’t the greatest rapper in a conventional sense but he was important to many people who could relate to him, even if I couldn’t.
The majority of people who read this blog don’t fit into the ‘Pac appreciation contingent, similarly with Wayne but it’s obvious he’s taking a similar path. He’s been grinding for a long time so granted he deserves the success. At least he’s unique. Right now Weezy and Yeezy got the game locked though, so that’s your yin and yang right there. I’ll take Weezy over Jay or 50. I want to like him so it’s a challenging listen. Time will tell.

  • 13 Give Thizz To Yo Kidz // Jun 2, 2008 at 5:26 am

The Wayne and Baby album and Birdman solos will get way more play in my hood than Carter III for all the reasons already explained by Darlo and Brian. It’s a decent enough effort but way too calculated, didn’t keep with the Carter format and, most importantly, didn’t keep it N.O.

  • 14 Walter Biscuitz // Jun 2, 2008 at 6:20 am

Am I on something coz all i seem to be seeing is praise for Lil Wayne. Is this still fatlace or have i got the wrong number?

  • 15 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 2, 2008 at 6:46 am

BEEN IN A CADDY, BEEN IN THE ALLEY
N*GGA, BEEN ON THE BLOCK RIGHT IN FRONT OF MS. GLADYS

I think we can blame the lack of Baby on the geeks who made the edit of Like Father Like Son sans all the Baby verses.

  • 16 salvador darlo // Jun 2, 2008 at 7:13 am

Am I on something coz all i seem to be seeing is praise for Lil Wayne. Is this still fatlace or have i got the wrong number?

^Man – fatlace is starting to attract all of this lot.

  • 17 Walter Biscuitz // Jun 2, 2008 at 7:33 am

Is it some sort of hilarious post-modern ironic joke maybe?

And getting back to real rap for a sec, why aren’t you slags reviewing the latest MC Paul Barman material?

we try to be democratic at fat lace… when it suits us and so far the poll speaks for itself as to the general feelings of the fat lace readership on Weezy

  • 19 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 2, 2008 at 9:29 am

Eh, Darlo – you know you’re being a snobby purist regarding Nothin’ On Me. If this had a produced by TMIX tag on it i bet you’d be goin’ crazy over the beat (how ironic that Maman made one of the few Southern soundin’ beats on the album, though) and it’s the one dope instance of Wayne’s use of autotune.

Is it wrong i think Juelz has the 2 hottest lines on the whole album? (”my wrists look like frozen Polish spring water” and “i’m gettin’ money outta the ass, that’s some expensive shit”

  • 20 salvador darlo // Jun 2, 2008 at 9:40 am

Eh, Darlo – you know you’re being a snobby purist regarding Nothin’ On Me.

^Nah – I’m an Alan fan too as many people who know me would attest – this shit just bores me. Too flat – despite the genuinely dope verses on offer.

As for the autotune I love that shit whatever – ‘Lollipop’ is my joint – and that shit ‘Me and My Drank’ he did is incredible.

It’s nice to be called a purist though as my playlist these days is basically just T-Pain and The Dream.

  • 21 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 2, 2008 at 10:22 am

Oh shit, i’d slept on Me And My Drank.

That’s amazing and totally obliterates Lollipop and Got Money.

  • 22 salvador darlo // Jun 2, 2008 at 10:38 am

Yeah – why is that not on the LP? Would have given it much more character.

  • 23 Give Thizz To Yo Kidz // Jun 2, 2008 at 11:41 am

While I agree with the comments on Mannie’s recent output, I think he coulda shoulda woulda come correct on this. I’m really feelin some of the new Juve shit – Fight Song (prod Mannie Fresh) and Every Day – he’s almost going back to that 400 Degreez flow..

  • 24 lace da booze // Jun 2, 2008 at 2:24 pm

(”my wrists look like frozen Polish spring water” and “i’m gettin’ money outta the ass, that’s some expensive shit”)

if those are the 2 hottest lines on the whole album then I dont think Pac’s (or Biggie’s) legacy is in danger. Matter of fact Sen Dog & Group Home are probably wondering if their ASCAP awards got lost in the post

  • 25 Fila my nutsack // Jun 2, 2008 at 4:17 pm

pac had a good voice and positive, uplifting lyrics for the disenfranchised, wayne talks in a whiney voice and glamorises guns, drugs, prostitution and is negative, just a gassed up ego with no intelligent rhymes. He has a few tracks that work and a few genuinely quirky one-liners, people feel himlike crazy coz he’s hype and people have lost the friggin plot these days, tupac was an icon (not to me, but I can see why he is to many),wayne is a moron.

  • 26 Fila my nutsack // Jun 2, 2008 at 4:18 pm

ps. paul barman is even worse.

  • 27 el blanco diablo // Jun 2, 2008 at 7:32 pm

When Lil Wayne overdoses on Night Nurse and ends up dead he will be lauded by a generation of ill informed mongs as the greatest rapper of all time…and lo, his crack baby face shall adorn a million badly designed tribute t-shirts and bandanas. People will tattoo their eyelids.

It’ll be like when 2pac died but the irritance levels will be amplified by about a zillion.

  • 28 Antonio // Jun 3, 2008 at 3:14 am

Clearly Weezy is not for me.

  • 29 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 3, 2008 at 4:55 am

You surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally.

Can we get emoticons for these comments? I’m thinkng we need a backpack emoticon for use around here.

The couple of new tracklistings of this which are now floating about are annoying me.

  • 30 End Level Boss // Jun 3, 2008 at 5:22 am

I just ain’t feeling it. Probably because it’s wack as fuck!

  • 31 Walter Biscuitz // Jun 3, 2008 at 5:31 am

“ps. paul barman is even worse.”

I was sort of joking, I was just refering to Fatlace’s past afilliations which were at least entertaining and different. This Wayne-riding just seems to be pandering to the masses for a few extra hits. However if you really want to try and compare Lil Wayne to Paul Barman then go ahead, it’ll be fun.

His new tracks are cool as it goes. Especially the one about foreskins. I don’t have a foreskin, they’re like cheese socks, but then nobody ever asked me if i wanted one in the first place :(

  • 32 Dan Large // Jun 3, 2008 at 6:02 am

interesting, the votes are levelling out, but to give you guys some inside info we’ve had a lot more hits from the USA in the 24 hours. OK, even we’re sick of Weezy chat now, time for a new post.

  • 33 Walter Biscuitz // Jun 3, 2008 at 6:07 am

    Paul Barman Paul Barman!

  • 34 Give Thizz To Yo Kidz // Jun 3, 2008 at 7:01 am

Cash Money is legendary to me. which is why all my hopes and dreams lie in the Hot Boys reunion hopefully being with Mannie and TMix and DJ Nasty (although wouldn’t it be weird having the original working on the same project as his replacements?)

I love it when readers think Fat Lace is just going to be TJ Swann & Peewee Mel retrospectives. Read those mags – we’ve always covered new music (but through the prism of the old blah blah blah). And Paul Barman gets a cracker rap ban permanently – that wack punk will get no coverage on our watch.
And as a point of conduct in these responses – it’s Fat Lace policy to refer to Tupac at all times as ‘the rapist Tupac’, just for clarity and to draw a line between the real Tupac and the saintly Tupac some people imagine existed. Please remember this ’style sheet’ point – don’t make us edit it into your posts!

  • 36 Walter Biscuitz // Jun 3, 2008 at 8:27 am

“And Paul Barman gets a cracker rap ban permanently – that wack punk will get no coverage on our watch.”

Shame you all have to share a watch. I have my own.

  • 37 Fila my nutsack // Jun 3, 2008 at 3:21 pm

yeah man, CASH MONEY, one of the greatest Hip Hop DJ’s of all time. And those punks bit his name and used it for their crack head rap crew/label

  • 38 Antonio // Jun 3, 2008 at 3:33 pm

That ‘Let The Beat Build’ joint is wack as fuck, anyway. Maybe Weezy should get Paul Barman to join him, saying “I am the best rapper alive”. Get the fuck outta here, Weezy.

  • 39 brian beck from wisconsin // Jun 3, 2008 at 4:32 pm

Smack head rap crew/label >>> DJ Cash Money.

  • 40 Fila my nutsack // Jun 4, 2008 at 4:23 pm

  • 41 al b. // Jun 5, 2008 at 12:11 am

If you can’t impress a wannabe, then it’s really not that good:

I’m not from NYC and I got no street cred, and I’m not as big of of a Hip Hop head as most of u said. Funny how cash money arrived then shortly after that Hip Hop was dead. I got nothin against weezy – except for his dreads.
KanYe did his thing, comme toujour and I think the production alone will give this song the score. But be real, the lyrics were pretty poor. Hip Hops supposed to have a message, whether funny, truthful, educational or hardcore. This track said nothin to me and your opinion is yours.

We can’t let rappers get away with being whack. That’s just not Hip Hop. Nowadays, there are too many Hip Hop collectors and not enough connoisseurs. It’s alright, But you can’t keep supporting songs based on HYPE. If you do, then it’s only gonna get worse cuz you let it. Lyrics don’t have to be super hardcore to be HOT —

You know i, rather fuckem, lovem leavem, cuz i don’t needem… takem out the hood, keepem lookin good, but i don’t fuckin feed them

Spread love it’s the Brooklyn way. Moet & Alize keep me pissy. Girls used to diss me. Now they write lettas cuz they miss me <– classic shit.

I once got busy in a burger king bathroom! I’m crazy, allow me to amaze thee. They say I’m ugly but that just don’t phase me <— still LOL.

    That’s my peace.

  • 42 Antonio // Jun 6, 2008 at 5:16 pm

for what is worth, Fila my nutsack is right.

  • 43 Dan Large // Jun 7, 2008 at 6:23 am

The poll says it all, God MC. I’m starting to agree after digesting his album non-stop for 7 days straight. I wouldn’t quite say God, I’d say Good though.

  • 44 lace da booze // Jun 8, 2008 at 1:46 pm

7 Days ?! seriously?! just the thought of him having a record deal makes me want to kill someone

  • 45 jazuuuuuu // Jun 22, 2008 at 12:40 pm

pls is lil wayne of cash money dead or alive?.there is a story of some stupid saying he is dead

  • 46 breezy f. baby // Sep 12, 2008 at 2:58 pm

why do the same ppl comment over and over again. it’s so stupid

  • 47 jonescoe // Oct 29, 2008 at 3:47 pm

Lil Wayne is at a different level in his career. He’s not going to be the same person nor is he going to sound the same over a period off time. Real artist, good artists progress overtime as will their skills. The fact that Weezy has this new sound i would believe that a tru Weezy fan would respect that. If you like hot boy weezy then u should like C3 Weezy.
