The Roxanne Saga Continues

January 27th, 2009 · 3 Comments

And it don’t stop! It’s been more than a minute since we last beat you over the head with the minor instalments of a beef that started over a song about an imaginary character called Roxanne, with one of the major protagonists – Roxanne Shante – not even being called Roxanne in real life. That’s how hip-hop history is formed, yo. And this series of posts won’t finish until we’ve ripped and posted every long-out-of-print footnote from the entire debacle. We’re nearing that date. We’re down to three or four hard to trace Roxanne records – and we reckon we’ll have those soon. And when we’ve done those, we still might not stop. We might start making new records to keep it going. ‘Roxanne 2009′ with Autotune, anyone? Thought not.

One of the hardest Roxanne cuts to track down, this is also one of the best. The beat is bouncy and the childish vocals make this a piece of classic juvenilia like ‘Boo-Boo’s Break’. We can also add another minor beatboxer to the long list of mic-soakers in the form of Rahjeeb. And if that turns out to be Rahzel, even better.

While the West Coast Crew were telling people to ‘Put the pipe down’ (see our Crack Rap thread, which will also never die, even if we have to bring Reagan back), their East Coast equivalents were trying to draw a line under the whole Roxanne affair. Now that’s having your priorities straight. And how did they do it? By recording a record about it. And everyone ignored them because the Roxanne saga rumbled on for at least another fortnight. Best Roxanne thread on the internet ever, ya heard.

That above message could mean that roxanne ‘09 could be a reality. Have you got autotune? You def gotta get an interview with her for the blog.
