Having both contributed and been personally associated with HHC for almost 15 years , the Fat Lace crew take their hats off to Hip Hop Connection and it’s long serving editor Andy Cowan. Sadly, you’re looking at the last ever issue of HHC.

    r.i.p – H.H.C,
although i stopped buying ye in 93,
i still have some funny-ass memories,
and in the cellar a box of mouldy copies,
my impulsive rants appeared in Bite Back (if that’s what the letters page was called?),
i’d rifle through an find em but they probably trite n wack,
like my open letter to krs-one,
chattin some bollocks and thinking he’d be stunned,
and i think they reviewed our second e.p,
when we was Nottz finest as Logik MC’s.
if i remember rightly you turned jiggy,
and even had a cover with mariah carey,
so i started buying ego-trip and by the time that’d flopped,
i was online and since then i ‘ant been near a magazine shop..

btw, i think i’ve still got the first issue, will it be worth owt in 20 years when I go to cash in my vinyl nest-egg?

I don’t know what was worse Mariah or Oxide & Nuetrino.

I had a lot of letters in bite back, under different aliases, as you can imagine.

Wasn’t Ruff Styles the Creature From The Wack Lagoon?

ps. RIP HHC (in it’s paper format)

  • 4 done // Mar 18, 2009 at 10:36 pm

fitting that its an issue on the g.o.a.t cos thats what they were in hip-hop publication terms.

competition is none, the only word on this here hibbity hopp worth trusting.
and to those readers that jumped ship and never looked back following the MOS years, you missed the best hip-hop publication there was (incl. source, ego trip etc)
peace and on occasion il spill what im drinkin on purpose in memory of ye.
ps drew stay up you were one of the finest type-wreckers of th bunch. and who the fuck was harris pilton? that clown made me want to buy the shit LP he was reviewin out of spite.

  • 5 done // Mar 18, 2009 at 10:46 pm

and im not a disgruntled artist who got a shit review. just thought whoever it was dragged the tone of the mag down a bit.

rip hhc, the “original rap magazine” on the cover didnt just refer to its age of inception – they had ideas for days.

  • 6 i the t // Mar 19, 2009 at 2:28 am

what do you mean by “MOS years” ?

  • 7 102 names // Mar 19, 2009 at 5:05 am

The years where MOS Def was in every issue???

Lucy Van Pelt – (RIP) – Rest In Pieces. Won’t miss her (his) bullshit reviews.

  • 8 102 names // Mar 19, 2009 at 5:07 am

…I also feel sad that Stig (Of The Dump) won’t ever get to have the monthly full page feature that he wanted. NOT.

  • 9 done // Mar 19, 2009 at 5:45 am

Ministry Of Sound were their publisher for a while, forcing the mariah carey covers etc and were largely responsible for their falling off. they did an issue bout it a while back, its a good read.

and they rightly stopped givin mos props after a while, the confused cunt.

Streetz is waitin’ for Def Chef to be reborn, b.

  • 11 done // Mar 19, 2009 at 5:48 am

dunno if my comment went through there, mos stands for ministry of sound, theyr publishers for a while, who currupted them a bit blah

  • 12 Nottingham's 'Mr Sex' // Mar 23, 2009 at 8:38 pm

MC Jason Squires and Glock-N-Steal will be pouring some Lambrini on the pavement for you this night, HHC.

For a long time, it was the only Hip-Hop publication that wasn’t afraid to take the piss when it was necessary. And Bite Back was always funny as fuck. I still use ‘tight-jeaned ponce’ as a term of abuse.

  • 13 Nottingham's 'Mr Sex' // Mar 23, 2009 at 8:50 pm

(by the way, did anyone actually hear ‘Bundle Of Wire’, the MC Jason Squires demo tape that was advertised in HHC for a while? And was he a piss-take?)

  • 14 102 names // Mar 24, 2009 at 4:31 pm

I remember a reader once suggested that the bite back text was printed over the top of a photo of a semi-naked woman and they did it in the next issue. That’s customer care for you folks.

  • 15 chickenlicker // Mar 24, 2009 at 6:37 pm

i am genuinly gutted. I guess its true, real hip hop is dead. Might as well go buy that new Soulja Boy album and get it over and done with. Btw, the website is still selling subscriptions for the next 3 years, wonder how many people will get f’d in the a by that!

  • 16 chickenlicker // Mar 24, 2009 at 6:47 pm

Remember when DJ Muggs wrote that letter threatening HHC when he got a bad review? Ha ha ha, Mug! (Dope tho) And ‘The Cleaner’ Rawkus Scratch Perverts mixtape? 100 greatest hip hop albums of all time in 99? That list is truly the definitive top 100 2 this day! I was 17, and it turned me onto ALL the classics. Remember the sick artwork after the jiggy years? (Though it was almost impossible to read the captions!) Remember that gay dude who kept writing nasty raps in bite back about shagging men? Remember when they gave Dr Dre’s chronic album of the month and 4*, but DITC Worldwide 5* in the same issue? THATS why HHC was the best hip hop magazine of all time.
Jesus man, I fucking loved HHC.

  • 17 Jaz // Mar 25, 2009 at 3:53 pm

Fucking about time! HHC sold out years ago.

Forgot the b-boys and what real hip hop is. Went all “bling” and shit, oh and having 50 cent on the cover every other month didnt help either.

Was dope back in the day tho.

  • 18 Mr Pen // Mar 25, 2009 at 4:39 pm

Yeah pretty much the same as everyone else, loved it back in the days it switched me onto those independents but lost it towards the end and stopped buying it-RIP HHC

  • 19 Drew Huge // Mar 26, 2009 at 6:31 am

You know absolutely nothing. Nothing. If it didn’t have 50 cent on the cover every other month, it would have died years ago. If you’d read HHC recently, you’d have realised just how ‘real’ (whatever the fuck that idiotic term means) it was. Some of the interviews with pioneers are unparalleled and the coverage of niche scenes something untouched by other mags. If you don’t know the realities of how mags live and die in a blog-eat-blog world, shut up.

  • 20 done // Mar 26, 2009 at 7:56 am

word up drew! the stars on the cover thing is a neccisity that all major mags do, that extra revenues what keeps them alive. HHC was the longest running hip-hop publication ever, bar none (including the source, which was only good for 5 years or so)
but once you got past the actual cover, you read the greatest fukin thing ever, they were the most unbiased writers ever, major label down to local under-underground cats were shown no preference, just judged on pure dopeness, just like the old days.
in the last fie years they put skinnyman and a load of other cunts that would never get coverage, let alone covers, on the cover with top billing.
it was actually getting better and better, go buy the last issue, it will say it all.
im genuinely pissed off bout this and its just a fukin magazine! but you clowns are displaying all the qualities of TOYS. dont know shit.

admittedly they did “sell out” (they actually themed a whole issue round this bullshit word a year or so ago) a little due to pressure from publishers round the time all you so-called heads jumped ship, but compromise?

they were the perfect example of how not to.

  • 21 done // Mar 26, 2009 at 8:01 am

the worst part bout this is all these kinda attitudes are pretty much whats gonna stop it ever gettin up an running again( not that that ever happens).

call me a a weird obsessive fanboy or whatever but i have honestly never gotten this worked up over some shit as stupid as a magazine, its just well……………..damn, they were the shiznit.

  • 22 BADASSMFER // Mar 26, 2009 at 2:49 pm

Iam Crying! End of an era!

This is truly a sad day.

  • 25 chewy // Apr 8, 2009 at 7:07 am

No freakin’ way… I can’t believe it! I’m genuinely shocked that HHC has gone, I’ve even been buying it the last 2-3 years that they supposedly “fell off”. Good call on Lucy Van Pelt though… !! 0_0
