We’re determined to keep upping crack records until Reagan comes back to life and reinjects crack cocaine back into the ghettoes so we can have some nice music again. Here we have a couple of mid 80’s curios, lovable for entirely different reasons. The True Life is notable for being the production debut of one Eric Sadler, although there’s scant evidence of any Bomb Squad audio histrionics here. Dude on the intro flips it : “Life is part of living, and living is part of life.” How deep? Deep as the abyss. However, they did see their way to including a nice sticker with the record, reproduced below. West Coast Crew put out a number of jams on Macola affiliate KMA in 1985 and 1986, and this is one of their finest five minutes of lecturing. However, kids, as always, say no to anti-drugs songs. Pick the pipe up.

Of course, I’d take drugs advice from a man wearing differently-coloured sneakers with a large pinch of (rock) salt. That’s some Bubbles from The Wire Season 1 type steelo, Mr Moltke! Still, shortly after this record was released, Jane stopped that crazy thing and got a job in V.I.M. Unfortunately, everyone else, from June to Janice, excluded from MC Shan’s ire, went on sucking on the pipe until they were all Whitney Houstoned to the tits. Enjoy Shan’s cautionary tale, and an obscure but moderately dope one from the Enjoy vault too…

There are only pretty much 4 or 5 topics in hip-hop today. They are:
a) Selling coke
b) Cars (with sub-topics on rims and wood grain)
c) Girls
d) Dances
e) Taking hip-hop/NY back

Then again, that’s pretty much always been the case, only no-one used to rap about gripping wood grain in 1985 (and what a blessed relief that was) and coke back then was crack. Ah, innocent times, when a suck on the glass dick was a guaranteed boost to your sex appeal and self-esteem. In celebration of those halcyon days, we’re going to be dropping some crack classics in the coming weeks, from the familiar to the deservedly obscure. Here’s 1 of each to help you ‘Get your Winehouse off the crack’: Everyone knows the ‘87 heat from Masters of Ceremony, engineered by one Skeff Anselm. But we’ve got a soft spot for a boo named Goldie (with special appearance by Human Beat Box King Lamont ‘Kendu’ James, no less) with her little piece of 1986 Bronx magic on Real Def records…
